Default PVP noob question

I know that most of you have already heard this question but I was wondering....

Are Rangers good in PVP?

My main in PVE is a Ranger and I was just wondering if it would be good to use it in PVP...

Why not try it out for yourself and see if it suits you/your style of playing in pvp. But yes, they are good.

yeah, rangers are excellent in pvp and are often referred to as a 'toolbox', a lot of responsibility though.

Probably better to use a pvp ranger at first though, unless your PvE one is perfect. (runes+equip)

I just tried it out and found out that the build I currently use should be modified abit.

It's very fun though and I feel as if I've been missing out on half the game all this time.

Yes rangers are great in pvp, and having a good one will really help your team win.

1) interrupts
2) rapid target switching to spread conditions over a whole team.

My skills are

Barrage, healing sig, anidote sig, sloth hunter's shot, d-shot, disrupting shot, cripple, and reflexes.

what is rapid targeting?

You might want to work on your build. Barrage is pretty terrible in PvP, so is healing signet. You'd also be better off bringing Mending Touch over Antidote Signet, as well as Savage Shot instead of Disrupting Shot. Depending on the kind of PvP, you also want a res sig (read: in anything but FA/JQ/AB)

Edit:

Rapid targetswitching means applying poison over the entire team by just tabbing through all of them - though this obviously requires Apply Poison.

I'd suggest something like this:
Burning Arrow, Needling Shot, D-Shot, Savage Shot, Mending Touch, Natural Stride, Apply Poison, Res Sig.

I would take most of what Haxor said: but you may want to consider Crippling Shot, Melandru's Shot and maybe Magebane.

Instead of needling shot you can use Sloth hunter shot and maybe Debilitating Shot.

thanks Now I won't have to go all the way to elona to cap burning arrow.

Okay here is what I'll get once I cap crippling shot.

Crippling Shot, Sloth hunter's shot, D-shot, savage shot, apply poison, res sig, mending touch, and Natural stride.

I'd say it's well worth getting Burning Arrow. It's a solid elite for Arenas.

Yes, rangers are great for pvp ^_^

Everything can be useful but I've always personally thought of rangers as the most powerful in the game. That is of course not always true and can be debated depending on build, etc. but they are capable of strong damage output, can spread conditions (and thus degen opposing team) and can shut down the enemy offense or defense as needed, making them versatile. And besides all that, expertise is an amazing primary attribute making rangers very flexible

All that said though, in my own humble opinion I think it's a lot harder to play a strong ranger than it is to play a strong any other class... just because they have to multitask a lot, unlike classes whose jobs are usually a bit more obvious :P I think you will enjoy it! You will probably practice, get good, and be the one to save your team in a bind ^_^ When you are beating on the enemy, and then say 'I Dshot WoH' to your team you will see what I mean

One last thought If you'd like, go to isle of the nameless from gtob and practice interrupting the npc's there... it is great practice! Also, I recently stumbled across a thread someone started elaborating all about rangering. It will be probably just what you would be interested in: http://www.teamquitter.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3797 Good luck

Wow, thanks Sarra That sure lifted my hopes (I was just pumbled to death in pvp and was told that Rangers weren't for pvp)

I do have trouble with apply poison (my only wilderness skill so I don't have a lot of attributes in there) I can get a lot of the other team but by the time I switch to another attack I'm either dead, trying to res, or on the brink of death.

I guess I've just got to get use to playing at a faster pace. My Guild doesn't do pvp so I'm usually doing random battles which can be a pain.

the generic attribute spread for rangers in pvp is:
12+1+1 expertise
9+1 marksmanship
9+1 wilderness survival
3 protective prayers

make sure you have that attribute spread. the high expertise is what's giving you staying power. otherwise, your energy will bottom out far too quickly. most rangers rely predominately on conditions, so having a high marksmanship is not needed.
